Luther Ronzoni Vandross Jr. was a known American singer, record producer and songwriter. He was born on April 20, 1951 in New York City. People know him for his lovely and soulful vocals. During his career, Vandross worked as a backup vocalist for several artists including Todd Rundgren, Judy Collins, Chaka Khan, Bette Midler, Diana Ross, David Bowie, Ben E. King, Stevie Wonder, and Donna Summer. He also became the lead singer of Change and his debut album, The Glow of Love was certified Gold by Warner/RFC Records in 1980.

Luther Vandross was one of the most talented and loved soul singers of all time and his powerful and soothing voice earned him millions of fans around the world. He passed away on July 1, 2005, after suffering from a serious stroke for the last two years.

Personal Life

Born on April 20, 1951 in in the Kips Bay area of Manhattan, New York City; Luther Vandross was the fourth child and second son of parents, Mary Ida Vandross and Luther Vandross Sr. His mother was a nurse while his father was an upholsterer and singer, who died of diabetes when the singer was just eight years old. Vandross wrote the song ‘Dance with My Father’ in 2003 as a tribute to his father, based on his childhood memories in the house.

Is Luther Vandross still alive?

Grammy winner Luther suffered from a severe stroke for the last two years and died on July 1, 2005 in New Jersey Hospital. The singer was in coma for almost two months and tragically, he was unable to speak for a period and was meant to use a wheelchair. At the time of his death, Vandross suffered from diabetes as well as hypertension. He was 54 years old when passed away. The singer had died peacefully under his close circle of friends, family and medical team support of JFK Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey. His funeral was held at Riverside Church in New York City on July 8, 2005.
