His approach perfectly matches <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legalgeek.co\/our-ethos\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our ethos:<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"alert alert-success\" role=\"alert\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Come to make friends, not to sell<\/li>\n<li>Come to learn and to teach<\/li>\n<li>Look after your fellow law-gends, you may need their help someday<\/li>\n<li>This is your community, please pitch in and help. You will be rewarded<\/li>\n<li>Dress comfortably, no ties please \ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So ahead of his participation in New York, Legal Geek asked Mark to lift the lid on his approach to public speaking and to reveal a few secrets behind his popularity from the soapbox.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Public speaking &#8211; the Mark Cohen way<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I get asked to speak about many\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">legal topics:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0technology, its impact<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">delivery models, legal education and training &#8211; you name it.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I don\u2019t have a set \u2018talk\u2019 about these topics. So <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">each engagement &#8211; and I use that word intentionally because my goal is to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">engage <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with the audience &#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0depends on different factors. Sometimes it\u2019s just how I&#8217;m feeling on the day. At other times, it\u2019s what\u2019s going on in the world&#8211; the legal world or the wider world.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;A few years ago in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Madrid<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I spoke at a conference during the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catalonian<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> secession<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ist<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> movement. It really influenced my talk. Because when you\u2019re talking about legal topics how can you not mention that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as your lead theme<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? On another occasion, I was<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> delivering<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the keynote at the German Bar Association not long after Trump had been elected <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and had said some not-so-diplomatic things about Germany.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I am <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jewish<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and have German ancestry\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naturally, I spoke about the importance of the rule of law in democracy and how free speech and tolerance gave me the privilege of addressing the audience.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mark\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">human,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> holistic approach to public speaking is no gimmick. It\u2019s simply an extension of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his open personality and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how he thinks about the legal industry. His way of thinking is also reflected in the name of his consultancy business Legal Mosaic (also his Twitter handle: @LegalMosaic).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I chose this name for a couple reasons. First, I\u2019m visual. Second, when you look at a mosaic every piece must be seen within the context of other pieces, otherwise you don\u2019t see the whole picture. The legal sector is exactly the same. Law, like life, does not operate in a vacuum; things are inter-connected. I look for the connections and try to make sense of it all. I like to explore that mosaic in my talks and weave in some of what I have learned during a 40-plus year career.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31747\" style=\"width: 656px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31747\" class=\"wp-image-31747\" src=\"https:\/\/www.legalgeek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Mark-A-Cohen.png\" alt=\"Legal Mosaic on Twitter\" width=\"646\" height=\"374\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-31747\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Mark spoke at the Legal Geek Conference in London back in 2017\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<h2><b>How Mark developed his public speaking skills<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mark\u2019s upbringing ensured he developed a proficiency in the principles of debate and argument at an early age: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I had to negotiate two <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highly intelligent<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> parents with strong personalities and differing views<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so I learned to hold my own. Then at my school (a traditional all-boys school in New York) I was often engaged in public speaking. So I developed a feeling for an audience at a young age.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These skills were further developed as a civil trial lawyer over the first 25 years of his professional life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, none of this can guarantee an ability to speak authentically to an audience. That is something Mark says takes preparation, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spontaneity, and a bit of vulnerability, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;When I am planning a talk, the first thing I like to know is who the audience will be and where they are drawn from, how many of them are lawyers etc. Then I like to work out how many of them will know who I am. With that information I feel capable of being \u2018studiously spontaneous\u2019.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I try and combine that with humanity, authenticity, eye contact, and levity.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m not a big fan of slide decks\u2014they can be effective at business meetings, but I prefer that the audience engage with me, not focus on the slides. They can do that later. It\u2019s important to develop a rapport with the person speaking\u2014then you get to the substance of the talk. Both are important.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"alert alert-info\" role=\"alert\">\n<p><strong>Mark&#8217;s Tips for Public Speaking<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be yourself<\/li>\n<li>Memorise your first line and be prepared to ad lib as required<\/li>\n<li>Plant your feet firmly on the floor. A friend who is a speech coach told me this was the key to public speaking, and it works!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2><b>What can guests expect from Mark at Legal Geek North America?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Well, I haven\u2019t prepared my talk for Legal Geek North America yet but as with every talk I will be aiming to have engage the audience and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">encourage <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">them to ask questions <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the end of the talk or sometime later.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf that happens, then it\u2019s a good talk and from their follow-up questions I will learn more about the topic as well.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Legal Geek North America, questions can\u2019t be made directly after a talk. But all delegates are welcome, and encouraged, to seek out any speaker and engage them in follow up questions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even tricky ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;If I\u2019ve done my job properly then follow-up questions are normally <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thoughtful and constructive<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Only very rarely do you get \u2018gotcha\u2019 questions. But you have to welcome those too.
