Yet their very existence is under threat.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Tuesday night at Eagle Labs in Notting Hill, Legal Geek hosted an event where Nesta held a brainstorming roundtable to discuss their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legalgeek.co\/read\/lawtech-initiatives-wtf\/\">SRA access to justice<\/a>\u00a0project and our Law for Good arm hosted a round table to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crowdsource and share ideas about how the decline in Law Centre funding can be mitigated.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Tonight we welcome <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wearelegalgeek?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@wearelegalgeek<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nesta_uk?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@nesta_uk<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LawCentres?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@LawCentres<\/a> to the lab to host two round table discussions on Law for Good! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/yscwszed2U\">pic.twitter.com\/yscwszed2U<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Eagle Labs LawTech Incubator (@Eagle_Labs_Law) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Eagle_Labs_Law\/status\/1092859861262585859?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 5, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Present amongst the guests were Law Society President, Christina Blacklaws; Law Centre Federation Director, Julie Bishop; as well as Nesta\u2019s Head of Better Markets, Chris Gorst, and Programme Manager, Nicola Tulk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The evening began with Julie Bishop highlighting how Law Centres are increasingly having to do more with less:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLaw Centres have lost over <strong>40% of their funding in the past 5 years<\/strong> yet the most vulnerable in society still face the same problems. Sixty percent of those who come to us are women and we see an increasing number of people on an income of zero, whilst a higher average of people with disabilities require our assistance. We want the advice of the technologists here on how we can use our resources better, we need a hand.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brainstorming practical solutions was the focus for the (sold out) 40+ strong guests and the list of potential revenue generation and resource management strategies included:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Targeting the UK\u2019s SME market<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using premises more creatively e.g. renting desks<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Build a tech product which Law Centres can utilise, own and can generate revenue from<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Develop model contracts and templates to monetise<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Utilising trainees on secondment from law firms<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acting as consultants in specialist areas e.g. immigration<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A stronger political lobby fighting for more funding<\/span><\/li>\n<li>And many more!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We managed to grab a few interviews at the event.
