{"id":24376,"date":"2018-06-06T10:18:36","date_gmt":"2018-06-06T10:18:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.legalgeek.co\/?p=24376"},"modified":"2018-06-06T10:18:36","modified_gmt":"2018-06-06T10:18:36","slug":"postcard-sanfrancisco","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.legalgeek.co\/postcard-sanfrancisco\/","title":{"rendered":"Postcard from San Francisco"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22722\" src=\"https:\/\/www.legalgeek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Nextlaw-Labs-2F-Ventures.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"848\" height=\"99\" \/><\/p>\n<p>San Francisco is where it all began for Legal Geek back in 2015 so it\u2019s a fitting last overseas port of call on the #LGRoadTrip 2018 before we head back <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legalgeek.co\/event\/legal-geek-london-event\/\">to London for our final event<\/a>\u00a0(19th June).<\/p>\n<p>In the intervening three-and-a-bit years, the world has changed dramatically and the LegalTech scene too, yet some things have stayed the same: Jimmy\u2019s networking tool of choice is still a cup of coffee.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/Z6vszQ8Mweukw\/giphy.gif\" width=\"400\" height=\"299\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But all the while, San Francisco has continued to thrive as a technology hub and Legal Geek is delighted to be hosting another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legalgeek.co\/event\/legal-geek-san-francisco-event\/\">event in the city this Thursday<\/a> (7th June).<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of our arrival stateside we spoke to Dan Jansen to get the latest on the LegalTech scene in San Fran.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-24390 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.legalgeek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Dan-jansen.png\" alt=\"Dan Jansen\" width=\"64\" height=\"62\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dan Jansen: <\/strong>Dan is the CEO of\u00a0NextLaw Ventures, an early-stage investor which focuses exclusively on the global legal technology vertical.\u00a0Based in Palo Alto, Nextlaw Ventures is at the heart of Silicon Valley and, along with Nextlaw Labs, are Legal Geek\u2019s Around the World Tour partners.<\/p>\n<p>Jansen said: \u201cThere is a terrible irony in San Francisco because on the one hand it is the birthplace of Silicon Valley and technology companies have been here for half a century; yet the LegalTech scene is still quite nascent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like to say that LegalTech is FinTech\u2019s little brother. And there is a real opportunity in the vertical because there is the same potential for disruption yet a smaller pool of competitors. It is behind FinTech by about 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the timing is right for a breakout [of LegalTech] in San Francisco. The conditions are perfect. In California, you don\u2019t have to explain what a \u2018tech solution\u2019 is. Everyone already knows, and already gets it, you don\u2019t have to explain SAAS for example to anyone.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Plus lots of other industries are undergoing technological advancement too. Just as an example, the elevator industry is being looked at for how magnets instead of cables can be used to move elevators in all different directions across a building rather than just vertically up and down.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is kind of a silly example but the point is that in San Francisco there are industries which haven\u2019t been thought of before that are now undergoing technological disruption and innovation. LegalTech is in this bracket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCombined with this, the fact that LegalTech products are exploding makes San Francisco ripe for exploiting the opportunities that will come from this.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"alert alert-info\" role=\"alert\"><strong>What is Nextlaw Labs?<\/strong> Nextlaw Labs is\u00a0a global legal technology accelerator and innovation consultancy. Though autonomous, it is wholly owned by global law firm Dentons and the first LegalTech venture created by a law firm.<\/div>\n<p>Legal Geek\u2019s event in San Francisco is being held at co-working space Parisoma, near South Beach.
