{"id":21194,"date":"2017-11-13T14:37:27","date_gmt":"2017-11-13T14:37:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.legalgeek.co\/?p=21194"},"modified":"2017-11-13T14:37:27","modified_gmt":"2017-11-13T14:37:27","slug":"legaltech-dot-com-style-bubble","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.legalgeek.co\/legaltech-dot-com-style-bubble\/","title":{"rendered":"Is LegalTech a dot-com-style bubble?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No, no it\u2019s not, says Rob Wilmot:<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crowdicity founder and CEO Rob Wilmot was the first speaker at this year\u2019s Legal Geek Conference, and shared his thoughts on the importance of harnessing the innovation of individuals within companies as well as the unusual path he took to becoming one of the youngest executive officers of a FTSE 100 company, Freeserve, at the turn of the Millennium.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wilmot was just 29 when internet provider Freeserve floated with a market cap of \u00a31.6 billion, going on to peak at \u00a39 billion. Freeserve was sold to France Telecom in 2001 for \u00a31.6 billion and Wilmot moved on to new horizons soon after; eventually leading him to starting idea management software platform Crowdicity in 2012 (via multiple tech ventures many of which he remains involved with to this day).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wilmot\u2019s time at Freeserve \u2013 from being one of the 3 founding executives to its sale and then his departure \u2013 lasted less than 3 years \u2013 and coincided with the \u2018dot-com bubble\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So as Legal Geek listened to Rob\u2019s story, we wondered how this exciting time in LegalTech (and FinTech and RegTech too) looks to someone like Wilmot who has witnessed first-hand a boom and bust in technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe dotcom bubble was quite a traumatic time,\u201d Wilmot told Legal Geek. \u201cA lot of people lost everything because there was this hype around it all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cToday, I don\u2019t see another bubble developing because I see many companies are behaving very practically. I feel we\u2019re in a structured and stable time for growth, as well as being in a sweetspot for technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think if you are a start-up here today [at the Legal Geek Conference] it\u2019s really important to get the balance between ambition and practicality. If you overstretch yourselves you are going to collapse.
